On the first day, you will arrive in Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun (whichever is convenient for you). From there, you will take a road journey to Chopta, which is approximately 200 km away from Rishikesh and 190 km from Dehradun. The drive is scenic but long, taking about 7-10 hours. Upon reaching Chopta, you will check into your campsite or guesthouse and settle in for the night. After a long drive, it’s important to rest and acclimatize to the high-altitude environment. You can take a short evening walk around Chopta to stretch your legs and enjoy the cool mountain air.

Overnight Stay: Campsite or Guesthouse in Chopta.

On Day 2, after a hearty breakfast, you will begin the trek from Chopta to Tungnath Temple, which is 3.5 km away. This is a gradual uphill walk, with the trail passing through beautiful meadows and dense forests of rhododendron and oak trees. The trek takes about 2-3 hours to complete. Upon reaching Tungnath Temple, you can visit the sacred temple, which is the highest Shiva temple in the world, situated at an altitude of 3,680 meters. Spend some time exploring the temple and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Afterward, you can either return to Chopta or, if you prefer, stay at one of the basic accommodations near the temple. However, it’s more comfortable to head back to Chopta for the night.

Overnight Stay: Chopta.

Day 3 starts early as you head to Chandrashila Peak from Tungnath. The trek is relatively short—about 1.5 km—but it is steep and requires some effort. The climb will take around 1–1.5 hours, and it is worth every step. Once you reach the summit of Chandrashila, you will be rewarded with stunning 360-degree views of the Kedarnath, Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Chaukhamba peaks. This spot is one of the best for photography and absorbing the grandeur of the Himalayas. After spending time at the peak, you will descend back to Tungnath and then return to Chopta for the evening. Relax and reflect on the awe-inspiring views you’ve experienced during the day.

Overnight Stay: Chopta.

On Day 4, you will leave Chopta and head towards Sari Village, located about 15 km away (a 30-minute drive). From Sari Village, you will begin the 2.5 km trek to Deoria Tal. The trek to Deoria Tal is easy to moderate, passing through beautiful forests and meadows. After reaching Deoria Tal, you will be mesmerized by the clear waters of the lake that reflect the Kedarnath Range in the background. Spend some time by the lake, enjoying the tranquil environment. In the evening, you can either camp at Deoria Tal or return to Sari Village for the night. Both options offer basic but comfortable accommodations, including guesthouses and campsites.

Overnight Stay: Deoria Tal or Sari Village.

On the final day of your trek, you will trek back from Deoria Tal to Sari Village. The walk back takes about 1 hour. Once you reach Sari Village, you will be driven back to Chopta (about 30 minutes by road). From Chopta, you will begin your return journey to Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun. The drive back is around 7-10 hours, depending on your destination. By the end of the day, you’ll have completed an amazing adventure through the Himalayan beauty of Uttarakhand.

FAQ Regarding This Trek

The best time to embark on the Chopta Tungnath Trek is during the spring and autumn seasons. Spring (March to June) offers a pleasant climate with lush green meadows and blooming flowers, making it an ideal time to enjoy the natural beauty. Similarly, autumn (September to November) brings clear skies and great visibility, providing perfect weather for trekking and capturing the stunning views of the Himalayas. If you’re a fan of snow, winter (December to February) can offer a magical experience with snow-covered landscapes, however, it’s important to note that winter trekking is more challenging due to cold temperatures and snow accumulation. If you're comfortable with snowy conditions, winter can add a serene, beautiful touch to the experience.

The Chopta Tungnath Trek is considered a moderate level trek. It involves a steady ascent from Chopta to Tungnath Temple (3.5 km), which takes around 2-3 hours. The trail is well-maintained, but it does have a consistent incline, making it slightly tiring. Once you reach Tungnath, the option to extend the trek to Chandrashila Peak is available, which adds a steeper climb of about 1.5 km. This section can be a little more physically demanding, but it’s manageable for most trekkers, especially those with a moderate level of fitness. The trek is suitable for first-time trekkers as long as they are in good physical health and acclimatize well to the altitude.

Accommodation options on the Chopta Tungnath Trek are basic but comfortable enough to support trekkers. In Chopta, you’ll find several campsites, guesthouses, and homestays, most of which offer tents, blankets, and basic facilities like shared toilets. Many trekkers prefer staying in campsites for a more immersive experience with nature. At Tungnath, accommodation is quite limited, and you can stay in basic shelters near the Tungnath Temple. These shelters are designed for trekkers who want to stay close to the temple and experience its peaceful atmosphere. For a more comfortable stay, it’s recommended to return to Chopta in the evening. When visiting Deoria Tal, you have the option to camp near the lake or stay in Sari Village, which has basic guesthouses and campsites as well.

When preparing for the Chopta Tungnath Trek, it’s important to pack wisely, keeping in mind both the trekking conditions and the mountain weather. First, make sure you have layered clothing to keep warm, especially in the evenings when temperatures can drop significantly, even during summer. A waterproof jacket and fleece are essential, and you’ll also need warm gloves and a hat to protect yourself from the cold. In terms of footwear, make sure to bring sturdy trekking shoes with good grip, as the trail can be slippery, especially if there's snow or rain. Don’t forget to pack snacks, a water bottle, sunscreen, and sunglasses to stay hydrated and protected. Other essentials include a first-aid kit, trekking poles, a camera, and a torchlight. It's also recommended to carry a power bank and a rain cover as mountain weather can be unpredictable.

While the Chopta Tungnath Trek could theoretically be completed in a single day, it’s not advisable for most trekkers. The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is around 3.5 km, which takes about 2-3 hours, and then the hike up to Chandrashila Peak adds another 1.5 km with a steep climb, which can take another 1-1.5 hours. Though the trek can be done in one long day, it’s much better to spread it out over two days. Doing so allows you to enjoy the experience without feeling rushed, gives you time to rest, and helps you to acclimatize to the altitude. Spending the night in Chopta or Tungnath also makes the trek more enjoyable and minimizes the risk of altitude sickness.
