The Nanda Devi Base Camp Trek is a high-altitude Himalayan journey that takes you deep into the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, offering majestic views of Nanda Devi—the second-highest peak in India. Located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, this trek is ideal for seasoned trekkers looking to explore one of the most serene and less-commercialized trails of the Indian Himalayas.

The trek usually begins from Munsiyari, a quaint hill town known for its panoramic vistas of the Panchachuli peaks. From here, the trail winds through dense forests of rhododendron and oak, crosses charming villages like Lilam and Bugdiar, and opens up into the alpine meadows of Martoli and Lwan—once a thriving trade route to Tibet. The final approach to the Nanda Devi Base Camp offers incredible views of peaks like Nanda Kot, Trishul, and of course, the mighty Nanda Devi herself.

The trek spans approximately 90–100 km and takes around 10–12 days to complete. With an altitude that reaches close to 4,000 meters, trekkers must be physically fit and prepared for the challenges of high-altitude hiking. Camping is done along the route, and the remote nature of the trail offers a peaceful escape into nature. Expect to see Himalayan wildlife, traditional Kumaoni culture, and breathtaking landscapes that shift from dense forests to snowy peaks.

The best time to do the Nanda Devi Base Camp Trek is from May to June and September to October, when the weather is clear and the trails are open.

Your journey to Munsiyari begins with a scenic drive through the Kumaon hills, passing through charming towns like Almora, Bageshwar, and Thal. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, Munsiyari is a picturesque town perched at an altitude of 2,200 meters and serves as the gateway to the Nanda Devi East Base Camp. This is your final road-head before the trek begins.

Upon arrival, take time to acclimatize to the altitude, explore the local market, and enjoy views of the Panchachuli range. You’ll also meet your trek guide and crew for a short briefing and equipment check. Overnight stay will be in a guesthouse or hotel, giving you much-needed rest before the adventure begins.

The trek kicks off with a short drive from Munsiyari to the starting point of the trail. The route gradually descends toward the Gori Ganga River, winding through thick forests of oak, rhododendron, and deodar trees. The serene surroundings and chirping of Himalayan birds make for a calming start.

You’ll reach Lilam, a small campsite nestled by the river, where you'll set up camp for the night. This initial day helps your body adjust to walking in the mountains while soaking in the tranquil beauty of the valley. The camp at Lilam offers a peaceful night under the stars with the sound of the river flowing nearby.

Today’s trail follows the Gori Ganga River upstream, with lush forest and narrow paths cut into rocky cliffs. The terrain becomes more rugged as you cross wooden bridges, streams, and boulder-strewn paths. You’ll encounter waterfalls and occasional views of high mountain walls.

As you approach Bugdiar, the valley opens up slightly, and the altitude begins to rise noticeably. Bugdiar is a scenic and peaceful meadow surrounded by forest, ideal for camping. It’s a common grazing ground for shepherds in summer and provides a perfect resting point to prepare for the steeper days ahead.

This day is both rewarding and demanding as the trek moves deeper into the high Himalayas. The trail climbs steadily, passing through thick forests that eventually give way to alpine vegetation. On this route, you may spot Himalayan wildlife like bharal (blue sheep) or a distant eagle circling overhead.

As you reach Martoli, you'll enter a historic village that once served as a bustling trade center with Tibet. Though mostly abandoned now, the village has old stone houses and provides stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Martoli is culturally rich and steeped in mountain lore, offering trekkers a mix of heritage and wilderness.

Today’s trek is relatively shorter but climbs gradually to help with acclimatization. You’ll walk through alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers and streams, with frequent panoramic views of Nanda Kot and other towering peaks. The path is scenic and tranquil, letting you enjoy the high-altitude serenity.

Lwan is a beautiful highland meadow that serves as the next major stop before the base camp. It’s an excellent location for camping, with soft ground and views that stretch to the snowline. You’ll rest early to conserve energy for the next day’s push to the base of Nanda Devi.

This is the most awaited part of the journey. The route from Lwan to the base camp takes you through increasingly barren landscapes, crossing rocky terrain and high-altitude pastures. As you gain elevation, the air gets thinner, and the grandeur of the surrounding peaks becomes overwhelming.

After a steady climb, you finally arrive at the Nanda Devi Base Camp—a flat expanse surrounded by towering snow peaks including Nanda Devi East and Nanda Kot. The sense of achievement, silence of the mountains, and awe-inspiring views create an unforgettable moment. Camps are set up here for a truly alpine night.

Today is reserved for rest, acclimatization, and exploration. You can take a short hike around the base camp to various viewpoints offering panoramic views of the glaciers and the summit of Nanda Devi. This buffer day is essential to help your body adjust to the altitude.

Use this time for photography, journaling, or simply absorbing the stillness of this remote Himalayan sanctuary. The entire region is untouched and pure, offering a spiritual and meditative experience for many trekkers. You’ll spend a second night under the stars, surrounded by towering giants.

The return journey begins with a long descent from the base camp back toward Bugdiar. While retracing the trail, you’ll get different perspectives of the landscape, especially with changing light and weather conditions. The descent is easier on the lungs but can be hard on the knees.

Reaching Bugdiar by late afternoon, you’ll feel accomplished covering a large distance. Set up camp in the same meadow and rest your legs after a long day. The drop in altitude will feel refreshing, and the night air will be easier to breathe again.

On your last trekking day, descend further through the forests and riverside trails to Lilam. From here, a short drive brings you back to Munsiyari. The fresh air, warm food, and a real bed will be a welcome comfort after days of trekking and camping.

In Munsiyari, you can spend the evening sharing stories with your group, revisiting the photographs you’ve taken, and buying local souvenirs. This marks the end of the physical journey, but the memories of the trek will stay with you forever.

After breakfast, you begin your journey back toward Kathgodam or your onward destination. The return drive offers one last look at the magnificent Kumaon hills. Most trekkers feel a deep connection with nature after this expedition, making it a truly transformative experience.

Whether you're heading back home or continuing travel, the Nanda Devi Base Camp Trek leaves you with unmatched peace, endurance, and an unshakable respect for the Himalayas.
